Saw a cool feature for a web site today that I am surprised more web sites that require login do not do. http://www.sqlservercentral.com does favorites list for there site that is stored on there server so when ever you go to there site and login you can get a list of the pages on there site that you have added to your list.  Great idea.  This is also a good site for sql server info.

MS changed the install on MSDE 2000 ( SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine)  and SQL Server 2000  Personal Edition   SP3 to turn off networlk connectivty , ie local access only , so you have to use a switch to turn on connection accross the network.  See MS KB Article 814130 INF: How to Secure Network Connectivity for SQL Server 2000 Local Databases , http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814130

Here is a page from page with info on block your computer from access sites,  http://www.safersite.com/Support/HowTo/How_To_Block_Ads.asp

There are ad blocks out that but the caught to most of them are they update/make entries inthe lmhost file that will blck sites but can slow down your pc and most of them use 127.0.0.0 which routes to your pc so if you have a web server runing it gets the request, they could leave the ip blank and then it goes to nothing (0.0.0.0 is said to work )
here is a application that intergates into IE ( free and pro versions) that blocks ads , http://www.allstarss.com/store/adshield.html
then there is this one, http://www.zeroads.com

these applications may or may not be using the hosts file and not sure if they get ip address i am currently check them both.
I have been looking for an easy way , or at least one in windows to block ip route , this article sounds like it may have info but have not goten the site to display the page, the site appears to be down, http://www.experts-exchange.com/Security/Q_20731164.html , this article also looks like a possible solution, http://www-tcsn.experts-exchange.com/Security/Q_20731164.html

Here are some cool pc secuirty devices to protect/log on to your pc.

Securelock , this one uses a key that you plug-in and a pin to access your pc and you can do encryption of data.

U.are.U. Personal (there is a Pro version) , does it with fingerprint and does logon and encryption

Authenticam  from Panasonic , bulit on technology from Iridian Technologies  , does a iris scan to allow access to pc.

OK, back to the asp.net datagrid and a link, the link to the code from yestrday did not work, the link to the article in the last posting does work but it does not let you set the window attributes.  I have found this which works a little for creating the code, http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/Code/2003/June/DataGridClientSideEvents.asp , but i still do not have it working as a link in the grid :-(

Ok, got it to work, found this on asp.net ,  URL = "<a href=""javascript:window.open('" & URLp & "','','menubar=no, width=400,height=275, scrollbars=no' ); void('');"">"

the key is the void('') only bad thing is that this shows aas the link in the status bar but that is better than not working.

Here are some RSS newfeeds sites, www.blogdigger.com , www.daypop.com , www.feedster.com , find.fyuze.com , www.newsisfree.com , www.syndic8.com

Well, here is my daily whine about the terrible quaility or .NET , the code bnehind looks good but I think it would be much easier and better for developing to use the much better model of inline code ( of course it proably does not get compiled ut at least it would work :-) ).  Todays problem is that it wants to post back everything and in order to do anything correctly you must now not only learn the crapy new ado.net model ( and it does suck and if any one including the guys at MS tell you it is better , or even good, they are lying all yo have to say is “tell me why a 'readonly-forward scrolling' resultset would lock the connection?” )  and deal with the lack of full support to the OS , you have to become a java programmer which I thought was what they are trying to compete against. Here is a forum post about opening a window from a datagrid with parms, http://asp.net/Forums/ShowPost.aspx?tabindex=1&PostID=338421

I was looking on asp.net to see about a problem with db creation in DNN where the cascading deletes are not get setup and found out how to add to the search modules list, you need to add a foreign key constraint to the modules table and then it will show in the drop down.  To add FAQ to the list you can run this or use EM to add it
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[FAQs] ADD
CONSTRAINT [FK_FAQs_Modules] FOREIGN KEY
(
[ModuleID]
) REFERENCES [dbo].[Modules] (
[ModuleID]
) ON DELETE CASCADE NOT FOR REPLICATION
GO

Just when you think you have learned it and see it all you find out you something that you thought you would have found out long ago. Today I found out something really good, had a string that was part of an insert statement and the character count was 1972 but it had 26 CR/LF in it which actually means that it is 2024 characters long, 1972+(2*26)=2024 , you have to remember that each cf/lf take up 2 characters when stored in text and in SQL server. The data I am inserting comes from Oracle and so I will take it that Oracle converts CR/LF to CR or a LF when saving since my data structure/column size are the same as the Oracle Databases. I had to convert the CR/LF to CR and then it is 1998 characters and will fit in the 2000 character column.  Makes told since , and acts as it should, when you read data  from a text file and import you have to take extra caution to make sure you have get the data back to the format it was originally and not adding characters during the transfer process as the text file in this case was doing.

Tab Order In ASP.NET / HTML
It is easy to do tab order once you find all the facts.
1. the first thing that gets focus when tab is pressed is the address bar ( unless you change it on page load with JavaScript), this is because the document gets the focus each time page is loaded
2. if there are other toolbars, like google, then they will get focus
3. then the first control in the html that has the lowest tabindex 0-32767 that is positive gets the focus, if there are multiple ones, which is valid, then the first one in the html code gets the focus, with absolute positioning on this could the last control you added. If you set a tabindex to a negative number then it is not included in the tab order.

There is no doubt after today that any one without dual-monitors has not lived yet.  I switched my 19-inch flat CRT and 21-inch non-flat CRT for 2 identical 21-inch flat CRT, that is 3.5 feet of monitors on my 4 foot desk. The only thing i regret is i can not have 3 of them and that LCD would be cooler.

If you think IMing is not a staple in this world, check this out, http://www.jupiterevents.com/im/fall03/index.html , yes a Conference/EXPo on IMing. I have received 3 invits to this thing.

Cool web service that is free from Unisys, http://weather.unisysfsp.com/PDCWebService/WeatherServices.asmx, you can read more at http://www.unisysfsp.com/default.aspx?catID=17

Cool and funny weather site, http://www.weatherpixie.com/

You can specify which version of ASP.NET runs your Web application by using the ASPNET_RegIIS.exe tool that ships with each version of the .NET Framework. You can run this for help, ASPNET_REGIIS.EXE /?
For Web applications, the configuration file is named Web.config and resides in the virtual directory for your application. Subdirectories of your Web application can also have a Web.config file, and the pages in the subdirectory are governed by both the settings contained in that specific Web.config as well as the settings contained in Web.config for the parent application's virtual directory. The settings contained in the configuration file in the virtual directory in which the Web files exist take precedence over the configuration file in the parent application's virtual directory if the settings conflict.

Microsoft once again makes stupid decisions, why in the world would you make it impossible to have a web site running a .net web app ( asp.net) have a .net web app under it. ASP could handle it but not .NET.  .NET sucks and is just a good tool to play with, not ready for primetime.  It will be 5 years before .NEt can be used for real work. To memory heavy and way to limited.

Well I did not do a journal entry on Friday because i only worked have a day and then headed to Kansas for the weekend. Today I did not work at all because it is Labor day so todays entry is a combination of Friday and Monday.

Friday August 29,2003 : Well with the help of David Miller( genus boy ) , I learn that MS testers need to be taught how to test a program. If you change from grid to flow layout n asp.net you really are not unless you edit ever control a delete the style attribute to remove the absolute position information other wise you really have not change a thing for the controls already on the page ( thanks MS testers for wasting 3 hours of my day :) ). This little bug ( or should I say BIG bug) was discovered because if you are in grid layout mode and have multiple grids ( or even one with controls after it) the grid will overlap the controls after it on the page if it is bigger than the size you make it at design time.

Monday September 1, 2003:

Did you know that if you do the foloowing you can get the datalink dialog to open and set the connection string for you:
dim cn as ADODB.Connection
dim dl as MSDASC.Datalink
set cn=dl.PromptNew

if you want to open the datlink to edit a connection string just do this

dl.PromptEdit cn

the connection object is really just a holder for the connection string. You can get the connection string from the ProptNew method by just seting a string variable equal to the method , ie strConnection=dl.PromptNew . The Edit requires you pass in a connection object .

Can ot figure out where MSDASC libarary is , well ms moved it. It was in its only libary but with ado 2.1 it was moved, MS Knowledge Base Article , It is now in the Microsoft OLE DB Service Component 1.0 Type Library.

Every wanted to create or wonder how people created there one bullet characters, well MS will let you do it if you have 2indows 2000 or XP. Just go to the run dialor ( windows key + R or start menu /run) and type in eudcedit and you will get the Private Character Editor wher you can create a font chanracter( you can import so graphics). Kind of cool.

EXCEL as some cool function, check out these

NETWROKDAYS, which will count the worke days minus the weekends and holidays that you list in a range and tell it to check. Pretty cool

LARGE(SMALL) will will find the nth largest(or smallest) value in a list.

OFFSET, will let you create dynamic ranges which are usfuk for charts and totals that have data being added or deleted often.

VLOOKUP, will do lookups in and return data from a column, ie, search coulmn a and return value from row in column b.
